When the appliance contains refrigerant

Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers, and some ice makers contain refrigerant. Tell the donation program, recycler, retailer, hauler, or city service what the appliance is before scheduling or transporting it.

Do not cut a refrigerant line or release refrigerant. Ask whether the recipient recovers it or requires written proof that a qualified person removed it. The EPA appliance-disposal guide explains the federal disposal requirements.

When a retailer delivers a replacement

Ask about haul-away when ordering the new appliance. The retailer can deliver the replacement and remove the old appliance during the same visit.

Eligible items include refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, microwaves, range hoods, and ice makers. The Texarkana store is at 501 Walton Drive; call 903-831-5700.

The Home Depot

The Home Depot offers old-appliance haul-away for an additional charge with eligible appliance delivery. The price varies by ZIP code and appears during ordering. The service excludes built-in cooktops, wall ovens, drop-in appliances, range hoods, air conditioners, and commercial or oversized refrigeration. The Texarkana store is at 4110 Saint Michael Drive; call 903-832-6002.

Prepare the appliance

  1. Tell the recipient whether the appliance works and describe leaks, rust, missing parts, or other damage.
  2. Empty refrigerators and freezers. Follow the recipient's instructions for defrosting, drying, and keeping the appliance plugged in before pickup.
  3. Ask who will disconnect water, gas, wiring, vents, and built-in equipment. Arrange qualified help when the pickup service does not include disconnection.
  4. Measure the appliance, doors, hallways, stairs, and gates before scheduling indoor removal.
Check first: Confirm acceptance before moving the appliance. Programs may limit appliance types, service areas, pickup capacity, and the work their crews perform.
