Furniture with bedbugs, mold, or contamination

Do not donate furniture with bedbugs, mold, bodily fluids, strong odors, or chemical contamination. Tell the city, landfill, or paid hauler about the condition before scheduling or transporting it. Ask whether the item must be wrapped and how to keep pests or contamination from spreading. Do not move an infested item through shared halls or place it outside until the receiving service gives instructions.

Before pickup or drop-off

  1. Photograph the furniture and describe stains, tears, odors, missing parts, water damage, and pests.
  2. Measure the furniture, doors, hallways, turns, stairs, gates, and elevator.
  3. Ask whether the crew enters the home, disassembles furniture, and removes it from an upper floor.
  4. Remove personal belongings and loose drawers, shelves, cushions, and glass when instructed.
  5. Keep donation items dry and do not place anything at the curb until pickup is approved.
Check first: Do not leave furniture beside an apartment dumpster or outside a charity without permission. The property owner or organization may treat it as illegal dumping.
