Check whether the item qualifies

Describe the condition

Tell the organization about stains, tears, odors, missing parts, rust, water damage, pests, or other defects. Furniture should be stable and complete. Appliances should be clean, complete, and working. Send current photos when the organization accepts them.

Use another option for disposal items

Donation centers may reject broken, unsafe, contaminated, or incomplete items. Use the guides for municipal bulk collection, appliance disposal, furniture disposal, mattress disposal, or self-disposal when the item is not suitable for reuse.

Prepare for pickup or drop-off

  1. List every item and give accurate dimensions.
  2. Send photos and disclose damage before the organization schedules or approves the donation.
  3. Confirm the date, address, service area, and whether the crew enters the home.
  4. Ask whether furniture must be assembled and appliances must be disconnected.
  5. Keep the items dry and protected until the organization receives them.
  6. Ask for a receipt if you need a record of the donation.
Check first: Do not leave donations outside a closed organization. Unapproved drop-offs can become illegal dumping and create disposal costs for the charity.
